Room of Voices Keyboards, Theremin & Vocals
Sound Sapien is a dynamic female artist from Boulder CO who innovates new sounds in music by combining both digital and organic sounds with her synthesizers, voice, and theremin. Her birth name is Karissa Gallo, and she began playing music at age 6, starting out with piano, and then moving to flute and drums in middle school.
She spent her youth often in the outdoors, hiking, biking and snow boarding, and when she wasn't in the outdoors she was inside painting, and doing graphic design and playing music. She continued her musical education in college and studied jazz, drumming, and recording arts. She has a love for many different styles of music from jazz, world music, classic rock to underground hip hop and electronic music.
Music has always been a source of inspiration and creativity for her, and she produced her first music in college, usually late at night instead of going out on the town, she would stay at her dorm and get into the "mad scientist" mode where she would concoct new sounds and create art via music. She likes to visualize music before creating it, and feels a sense of connection between colors, textures, and feelings which translate into sound as she creates music.
Sound Sapien's newest passion is for the performance on her theremin, which is a motion sensor instrument that generates sound based upon movement. Through this new instrument she is able to express her ideas seamlessly through the movement and dance of her hands. It gives her a sense of freedom and magic in her music, and she has now been experimenting with and playing the theremin for almost two years.
Sound Sapien is inspired by many artists such as Zero 7, Portishead, Massive Attack, DJ Vadim, Hieroglyphics, Living Legends, Sound Tribe Sector 9, Moby, Pretty Lights, Kraftwerk and many others including her partner Mingo Lewis who has helped her expand her horizons in music. She especially likes the concept of creating electronic music, but keeping it live, by performing with instruments that allow her to improvise and expand her skills.
In addition to her theremin, her other primary instruments include digital and analog synthesizers, electronic drum pads, and vocals. Her greatest strength in music, is her sense of rhythm and unique perspective on creating compositions and writing lyrics. Her music is surely to take you by surprise, combining emotional vocals with ethereal textures, sub bass, and grooving drums and percussion.
Sound Sapien is releasing a new double album in Summer of 2017 called Elementary Science which has a collection of vocal songs, as well as a collection of her original instrumental songs.
